Professional DJs use direct drive turntables to mix music and scratch with but you will have to spend more for these.  The quality of your direct drive turntables will vary depending on how much you pay for them. The higher its price, the better its quality.

Other items that you can save money for are speakers and headphones. DJ speakers play music and sound from mixers and consoles. They have high power ratings which give them a consistent high volume. Just like any other equipment, its price depends on the quality of its output. You may want to look into renting a pair of speakers for live event before consider buying one for yourself. You can also get a better mid-price range headphone for less than 50 dollars. Be sure to choose a headphone that is light weight enough to reduce ear fatigue. It should also come in a closed ear design to avoid outside interference with your mix.

5 Easy Steps on How to Mix Beats Like a Pro

Learning how to mix beats comes with a talent to listen to music. A beat producers ears are the most important tool in making the beat. It is very essential because how you hear a beat will affect what you produce. It could make or break your career in this field. 5 Steps in The Beat Mixing Process:

3. When you have deciphered the "perfect" timing, match the beat of the snare drum and configure where it comes from. Then, time when you can match it with the song.

4. Next would be to find the main beat of the second song and hold or pause it, then, let it go to your preferred beat of the first record.

5. Control the pitch while both records are playing. Observe if there are "off" beats and adjust the pitch until both beats match (Some software levels the input of the beats internally while other mixers are set up manually).

Now you know how to mix beat remember the main goal of beat mixing is to produce a cohesive and unified record out of the two different beats. In addition, to add color to the record, you could add some effects within or for the whole the record. You could even play with the volume to add little twists in the presentation of the beats. Chord Extension Guitar Music Theory Lesson

Major and Minor Seven Guitar Chord Extensions

At their core, major and minor chords are built from triads which consist of root, third and fifth (1 3 5) intervals. These intervals are derived from the major scale and named according to their scale degree. Other notes, or extensions, from the major scale can be added to chords such as seconds, fourths, sixths and sevenths (2 4 6 7). Adding extensions creates more complex chords with richer sounds. This free guitar lesson will give you a quick introduction to this topic and how to apply this music theory principal to the fretboard and popular songs.

Major Scale Patterns and Chord Progressions

Before you begin to study extensions you should first learn how to build major and minor chords (triads) from the major scale. This would include guitar chord progressions and playing by numbers (a.k.a. the "Nashville Number System"). You might even need to take a further step back and learn major scale patterns. Remember, each music theory topic builds on the one before it. Major scale patterns and building chords are two topics that are foundational to understanding and applying chord extensions.

Chord Building Theory

If you've already been through the process of building chords for the entire major scale, then you're ready to start adding chord extensions. All you have to do is repeat the whole process, but this time add an additional interval to the triad. For example, a seventh interval ( or 7). Starting on a G note in the key of G, 1 3 5 7 are G B D F#. The F# note is a major seven interval and is just one note shy of an octave. Any time you add an F# to a G major chord you create a G major seven chord (or Gmaj7). This can be done with any G major chord shape in any position, and any F# note regardless of the octave. You'll have to rearrange your fingers in order to accommodate this extra note.

Next, add a seventh interval to the ii chord in the key of G, A minor. To do this, count the notes of the G major scale STARTING ON A. If you do this correctly the seventh note away from A is G. This interval is called a flat seven because it's one fret less than a major seven (or two frets shy of an octave). When you add a G note to an Am chord you create an A minor seven chord (or Am7). This can be done with any Am chord shape in any position, and any G note regardless of the octave. You'll have to rearrange your fingers in order to accommodate this extra note.

Now that you have identified the seventh interval for the first two chords in the key of G you can continue the process with the rest of the scale. If you do this correctly the following sequence should emerge:

Dominant Seven Chords

The V chord, D7, is unique in that it's a major chord but it has a flat seven interval like the minor chords. Because of this it has special name which is "dominant" seven. For some strange reason, it's the dominant seventh chord that is written simply as "7." The major seventh chord must always include "major."

As with any music theory topic you learn about, you must apply extensions to the guitar fretboard by playing songs. The follow lists will help to get you started by naming some well-known tunes that use seventh chords.

From there, you can get into chords with multiple intervals added, but don't get ahead of yourself. Starting a Band (2) - Finding Musicians

Some people naturally start here first. That' OK. Even though I have numbered these points, they're not necessarily in any particular order. You and a friend, or even a sibling, may have an idea to start a band, but if you need other musicians, you'll need to look around. First though, be specific about the the style of music you desire your band to play. There is nothing worse than trying to play rock with a country player (or vice versa).

This is why you must be specific about the genre (rock, country, pop, R&B etc.),and even more importantly, the style (metal,punk, emo,hip-hop, etc.) of music you are playing. If you want water, you go to the well. To find musicians, go to music stores. You will find that most music stores have a place where you can post a flier or ad for musicians. If they don't have one, ask if you can start one. Also, talk to the sales people at the store. They are probably musicians themselves and they talk to other musicians on a daily basis.

Be sure to leave your e-mail address and/or contact number. Churches are another great source for finding musicians. But again, be specific on the style of music your are going to be playing. The most obvious place people say to look is of course, the Internet. I personally haven't had much success there, but others have. There are web sites, board post,chats and blogs that you can Google. The problem her though is that these musicians are mostly in other cities, towns or states (even other countries). Personally I have found that it is best to just get out and find musicians who are playing.

They are typically "in the loop" and have musician friends who are looking to jam. Best advice? Get out there, talk to people and network. It may take some time, but finding the right musicians to play in your band is very well worth the search.

Saxophone Instruction - Recording Techniques For Saxophone

Here are some techniques and ideas you may find useful for recording. Many of them will apply to other instruments as well. Whether you do it yourself or record in a studio or at live performances, it's essential that you know how to get your best sound, and what to do with it once you have it tracked. Don't assume that the engineer will know exactly how to get it for you - you will have to work together.

Like many acoustic instruments, the sax records well with the use of a condenser mic. Condenser mics differ from dynamic mics in that they usually require a battery (or phantom power supplied from the mixer) and have a broader pick up pattern which makes them less useful on stage because they tend to feed back. They provide a flatter response, meaning that all frequencies are presented more equally whereas dynamic mics are often 'coloured' to bring out voice tones.

When recording with a condenser mic, you can 'back off' with it at eye level up to three feet away from your face, or 'close mic' keeping it aimed near the bottom of the left hand over the bell as you would performing live. Most of us have discovered not to aim it down the bell as this can do some awesome damage when you let go with a low Bb. Your choice of mic, playing style, and recording set-up will determine just where to place it. If you are recording yourself, set up a few tracks to record and compare. You'll need it later to set the equalization (EQ).

The Neumann U87 is the industry standard voice mic and sounds great on sax. If it's high price ($1,000 +) is out of range you might consider a Sennheiser 441. It's a dynamic mic with a flatter response than those designed for live vocal use. Even the Shure SM57 & 58 can work well for rock & blues but you'll need to EQ a little. My recording mic of choice is the AKG C1000S. It brings out all the warm sax tones I can't live without and works well with other instruments, e.g. acoustic guitar and drum overhead. It was fairly well priced at around $300. It can also be used live, and doesn't feed back as much as I might have expected.

Using the direct in approach will require that you apply EQ during mixdown. I find that with the right mic, I usually don't need to change too much, but if you are working with overdrive guitars and thick synth patches, you might need a little help. If you have sweepable midrange you can boost 5-8K for those upper-mid voice tones. If you are using a dynamic mic like a Shure SM 57 or 58 be sure and boost the 300 - 350 lower midrange a bit to warm up the tone a bit. These mics drop off in that register leaving the sax sounding pretty tinny.

The next link in the recording chain is the compressor. The compressor will bring up the volume on the soft parts and prevent the signal from getting too hot on the loud parts. It also allows you to move around a little so you can have some freedom of movement while doing your takes. I get the best results in my home studio when plugging the mic directly into the compressor and the compressor directly in to the signal path. If you don't have a compressor, plug the mic directly in. Wherever possible, eliminate any unnecessary circuitry to get the cleanest signal. The track will get remixed and this is where you should apply EQ and effects. The dbx 163X is a nearly foolproof compressor with only a level set and compression slider to worry about. Once the level is adjusted (usually between 0 & -10) experiment to determine where the slider goes. With the sax, around -21 is usually about right. You want just enough so that everything you play gets recorded at a good level without sounding too processed.

Always add reverb post (during mixdown). This way you get the verb in stereo while leaving your track mono (better for placement during mixdown) Because of the delicate nature of the reverb overtones, they can get easily get obscured if they are recorded while tracking. Most processors have a wide selection of presets to choose from. Because of the saxophone's voice-like quality the hall and vocal plates work very well. For a funkier, more Sanborn like sound try the small club settings with more early reflections. You can use way more signal with these to achieve that kind of boxiness that sounds great where you don't want an audible trail.

If you've ever tried to emulate those recordings where the sax is swimming in a huge reverb, you will have discovered by adding that much it sounds like it's down at the end of the hall. So how do we keep the horn 'in your face' i.e. up front, and get that hugeness? Here's the secret: Use a large hall setting and set the pre-delay parameter to around 250ms. This allows a quarter of a second of everything you play to go on dry before the effect kicks in. It works beautifully on ballads and gives the horn a truly magnificent sound.

Here's a mixing technique they use on the big money recordings that can work well for the home recordist. Say you have an eight bar intro, then in you come. Use the pan controls at about 5 to 1 o'clock on the whole mix so that it is just about mono. When the sax comes in, pan down to full stereo. This is a subtle effect but will give the listener the impression that something magical occurred just as you started playing. Keep the magic coming!

Studio Mixers - Why You May Or May Not Need Them

Most people who have seen those large square pieces of hardware with all the knobs on them have probably wondered what it is and what it does. Those things are called studio mixers. Studio mixers are like the hand of the potter that makes the vase. While instruments such as the guitars, drums, bass, etc. are the clay, the mixer is what puts them together and shapes them to become something beautiful. With it, you can add effects to certain sound channels, position the instruments where you want them in the mix and equalize the sound in a way that would be considered music.

There are three different kinds of studio mixers:

1. Analog mixer - this does not convert the music that it is recording into a digital file. This is the original type of studio mixers and is still considered by a lot of sound engineers to be of superior and authentic quality to that of the newer types. The sound comes in and out with no digital enhancement.

2. Digital mixer - this accepts both digital and analog, and can provide effects that the analog mixer does not have. The music comes in as analog data, and the sound engineer may edit it before it comes out again as an analog sound wave that has been digitally enhanced.

3. A new type of analog mixer with a USB and Firewire feature added - this is just like the original analog mixers in it that the signal path is still analog in nature, and it may still have an analog output. The only difference is because of the added USB and Firewire feature, one can choose to make a certain track, or even the master mix, into a digital file that may be stored in the computer.

But while studio mixers are certainly important when you have your own studio, it is in no way absolutely necessary. One can opt not to have any mixers if they already have a very fast computer and are planning to use a lot of virtual instruments in the first place. Also, if the studio owner will be using real instruments but they are small in number, they can also opt not to have any mixers in their studio.

For the studio owner with a budget, they may need some studio mixers to enhance basic sound cards that are limited in their input and output. Also, studios that use a lot of instruments, especially ones that are synth or MIDI in nature, may also really need to have a number of mixers

How To Start Your Own Mobile Disco

After having decided that you want to start your Mobile Disco you will no doubt want to get to work as soon as possible and get your teeth right into providing entertainment to the vast numbers of parties, functions and weddings happening every day.

Now arrives my first bit of advice. Don't rush! There is a lot to think about before you jump in, for example:

What equipment do you need?

How much will it cost?

Where do you advertise?

How much do you charge?

These are just a few of the questions you will be asking yourself and will need to answer before you start. In order to help you through this I will guide you through all aspects of getting your mobile disco on the road.

So you have come up with a name for your business that makes your enterprise seem both entertaining (obviously the key element) but also still professional, in order to make people feel confident in booking you for their function.

Now you need to advertise. The simplest way of advertising is in local directories and phone books at first, and obviously via word of mouth. Have business cards printed up and make sure that at every opportunity you pass them onto potential customers. This is the best way to start, and as most career DJ's will tell you, bookings create more bookings. Most of a DJ's business comes from enquiries during or after a function just played.

Most bookings are priced according to the specifics of the function itself. Obviously the larger and longer it is, the more you should charge. On average however for a function lasting 4 hours from 7pm until 11pm for example you would be looking to charge between £120 & £180. Obviously the final price is up to you but the industry can be fairly competitive and you will have to make the function worth the expenditure.

Now, what equipment will you be needing? Clearly you will need some speakers and an amplifier. For most normal size functions up to about 200 people you will need about 500 - 600 watts of power. In simple terms you will need reasonable 15" Speakers and a 700 Watt amplifier. You can pick up a complete system like this for around about £300. Also you will be needing something to play music off of, most popular is a Dual CD Player and Mixer meaning you can seamlessly mix songs together. You can however find many different ways but for the purposes of this we will go with CD's. So now you have sorted out the sound, what about lights?

Everyone wants a party atmosphere and lights are integral to creating just that. They range in price from £30 up to as much as you want to spend. The key is to get a good mix. Any good disco, sound, lighting and entertainment store will be able to help with this.

Once you have all the equipment its up to you to just be entertaining. My advice is to make sure you meet with the people before the booking, and discuss precise song requests and such before hand, and make sure you take any feedback offered to you. Most of all be confident and be fun!

The first thing you notice about the Firebox is the heavy duty casing it is housed in. The case and controls are made entirely of metal - ridges on either side adding even further strength to the audio interface.

Music has gone through a number of major developments throughout its history. From the development of a notation system, to consistent pitch, through to the invention of the valve, music in its style and expression have evolved and changed significantly to the position today. It's really shocking that there are music producers who use basic or even free music recording equipment and still achieve great results. So I'm going to cover the basic recording music equipment you need to get the best sound from your home studio. In order to get the most out of your computer music recording you need to go for the best quality music production equipment.

If you are on a shoe string budget but you have an important recording session, hiring top notch studio equipment is not a bad idea. The digital music production age has made a lot of music producers to do everything in the box. If you are recording music in the box you will need a professional audio software (find out more about that on my blog).

On this online music production lesson I'm going to focus on recording audio without a mixing desk, using the internal software mixer. If you are working inside the box you won't need a mixing desk. And if you are using VST plug-ins you won't need a mixer, you will only need it if you are using hardware synthesizers. You just need a good audio interface with a lot of inputs. Get yourself a valve pre amp to record rich vocals and guitars. Other audio interfaces come with built in pre amps. Use DSP headphone mixes from the soundcard if you need different headphone mixes. Getting a headphone amp can bring out a good vocal performance because the singer and the producer will be able to hear exactly what is being recorded.

You can also be able to add effects to encourage a great performance. But other audio interface come with a built in headphone amp. You must also get a pop filter, if you have a good budget go for nylon but you can get amazing results with metal pop filters. If you really need hi-end quality recordings you may get yourself analog to digital converters, but they are very expensive, and I wouldn't recommend them for newbie's.

Avoid using USB microphones, they may be good for recording a lecture but not a professional audio performance, and if you are on a very tight budget get one with no auto gain circuits and they must have solutions for monitoring. To get the most out of your pre amps you will need an accurate monitoring. Buy a good pair of monitors, and as a professional music producer, you also need a competent sound engineer to master your tracks.

Do your research first and read up reliable reviews before buying your ideal recording music equipment, and don't waste money on poor gear.

Being a DJ can be a very rewarding hobby or career, but it can be stressful and expensive to get all of the right equipment. You need to make some hard decisions about what style of equipment you want to use. Many DJs these days are using primarily a laptop. Learn to Improvise at the Piano in 4 Easy Steps

You love music and can spend hours at your piano, playing tunes that you have memorized over the years. Everybody appreciates your skills at the piano and you are the pride of your family. However, there is a problem. Namely, the fact that you can only play songs that are in front of you in the form of sheet music. Without sheet music, you are like a fish out of water, fumbling keys and tones.

If this sounds like you, then you need to read on.

Improvising a song at the piano isn't rocket science. Its a combination of plain old practice, and some talent. If you have an ear for music, you should find it very easy to become a rock start at improvisation. Here are a few tips to help you start off:

1. Practice your scales in all keys, not just your favorite G or C. Improvisation largely involves knowing your scales, and without practice, you will never be able to switch quickly between notes and scales. I know that its not much fun, but it is a necessity.

2. Don't just practice major and minor chords. Branch out, try practicing the diminished, augmented, 6th chords. They can be extremely difficult, but once you get the hang of them, they can quickly add a lot of color to your songs.

3. Rather than sticking to the middle of the piano, spread out. Try playing the same song an octave higher, then an octave lower. Practice alternating between octaves in the middle of a song. With time, you will be able to mix up octaves for a wonderful, harmonious effect.

4. Never, ever give up. Improvisation cannot be learned over night. It takes the best players years and years of hard work to play like they do. If you give up too soon, you will never be like them.

iPod Or Computer Wedding Event Planner

So you've decided on a DIY iPod wedding. It's a great way to save money and have control of your event. Now you get to have total control over the music and add your personal touch to your big day with an Ipod or your maybe your computer" Maybe you might want to use the worlds largest iPod docking station which I'll talk about later. Imagine no more Cheesy DJ or Bad music selections.

First let's talk about what your replacing... I'm a 30-year veteran DJ & I've seen it all. I'd much rather you hire me but the point here is how to DIY successfully. I'll show you just that. You have to remember not all DJ's are cheesy or play bad music. Sometimes DJ's get a bad rap because the client wanted the cheese and bad music played. Some DJ's can be cheesy on demand or quiet or somewhere in-between.

A good DJ will allow you the options and deliver exactly what you agreed to. When hiring a DJ you typically pay for experience & talent, a great DJ should comply with your every wish and if you're off base they should give good advice and still do what you ask. Things good DJ's do - Line up a wedding party for introductions, tell everyone where to go & when, introduce the bridal party with class and energy, introduce the 1st dance, invite the bride and father up to dance, invite the groom and mother up to dance, introduce the person giving the toast or toasts, intro the person saying a prayer, do cheesy things during dinner i.e. Glass banging invites, entice shy folks up to dance with silly dancing activities, host the cake cutting, garter removal and or announce garter/bouquet toss. and finally coordinate all these events with the venue and the photographer / videographer. If you're going to do this remember not to ask the venue staff to do the things a DJ would do for you. They have enough on their table. Pun intended.

Avoid hooking up your iPod and sound mixer/preamp to a hotels ceiling speaker system. That's even if they let you. It's very easy to blow it up and the repairs are quite expensive. Besides the sound is usually not very good anyway. More on the set up later.

Here's what you'll need to get started: (Everyone has different expectations) you have to decide what's important to you.

1. An iPod or a Lap top computer that plays your music, a Mixer / pre amp, speakers, stands, amplification, microphone, dj effect lights, up lighting, cables and connectors and a friend who knows how to set this stuff up. Oh there are two more options. Rent / borrow a DJ style sound system and have the friend set it up or there is also the option of renting the worlds largest iPod docking station which is basically a gigantic sound system in a box on wheels. It's plug and play and as long as you know how to operate your iPod you're good to go. 2. A friend or friends who won't mind pressing Play, Pause and possibly someone to make announcements. All who won't overindulge say or do the wrong things and ruin your day. (Microphone control is important)

3. A music/photo montage/video/karaoke selection session with your spouse 2B. Many iPods will allow all of those options.

4. Another session with your friends to add to what you've missed - and to eliminate the songs that may be cheesy in their opinion.

Planning the Cocktail hour

Make an iPod playlist for the cocktail hour.

Will the cocktail hour be in the same room as the reception? If not you'll need to either run an additional sound system (or giant iPod docking station), run a speaker from the set up in the reception room, set up the system in the cocktail room, break it down and reset the system in the reception area or just abandon the cocktail hour idea. I suggest background music for cocktails. Instrumentals work perfectly here. i.e. Non-High energy, mellow songs or even standards like Sinatra, soft rock etc. You may want to mix a little bit of medium energy in during the cocktail hour. You don't want to make to low energy. Make all playlists a bit longer than you would expect, as timing doesn't always go exactly as planned. Have fun with it, but remember that your guests are trying to talk during cocktails.

Dinner

Make a few playlists for dinner...

Playlist 1.

For during begin with a lower tempo and slowly build up the energy by increasing the speed of the music and the energy of the music as the meal moves along. Dinner is usually about 1 hour depending on if it's a buffet or a sit down. Sit-downs tend to be longer. You going to want to see people enjoying the music with feet taping and heads moving as dinner ends. Make your play-lists with extra songs, as it's typical for weddings to run late.

Announcements (If you're going to have them)

If you wish to have formal announcements select someone to act as the M.C. (Master of ceremonies) Have a script for the person/s you have chosen to make your announcements unless your comfortable with that person/s ability to adlib, not say anything that will offend anyone, use clear diction, hold the microphone close to the mouth without cupping it, not speak to long and have the ability to control the microphones use. You may wish the M.C to introduce the bridal party and then the bride & groom. Following this you have to decide when and if you want the following events to occur.

1st Dance, Father/Daughter dance, Mother/Son dance, Toast/s, blessing announcing of the cake cutting, garter removal and or announce garter/bouquet toss. The announcements should be warm, professional and fun. If the announcements are in anyway the slightest bit offensive sounding, it could ruin everyone's fun and the feel of your reception. I suggest you exercise extreme caution here, as this element is crucial and can make for a failed wedding reception if not executed properly. Have someone to operate the iPod for introduction music, as this would be difficult for the MC to do at the same time.

Dancing

Playlists for Dancing.

After or in between your events you may wish for your guests to dance. I suggest you make 2 playlists, one for fast music and the second for slow songs. This depends on how much you want the ipod operator to be involved and how much control you want over the dancing.. Your iPod operator should be familiar with its use. The operator should not be cutting songs off by accident while people are dancing, knowing where to find songs, how to avoid a long space between songs etc. Roughly estimate to play 4 to 6 fast ones and then 1 or 2 slow ones. You can repeat this process until the end of the reception or You can just make one playlist for a fully automated reception.

The order of the songs is important. You want to make sets of songs that build up in speed, beats per minute and intensity. When it gets to a climax, that's when you change to a different genre or go to a slow song. Watch out for songs with long boring introductions, especially long talking intros that will clear the dance floor. If you really want control over the music make many playlists with different types of music. You may want to set your ipod to crossfade. Remember that can cut off the end of songs that have a pronounced ending. Normalizing the sound on your iPod also makes for less high and low volume songs, which can be annoying.

If your iPod has video capabilities you can have a slideshow presentation with music, have it scroll through photos of days gone by, scroll through photos of the ceremony. (Provided someone with a laptop can do this for you quickly or make it on a second iPod). Maybe play music videos or even some karaoke A wide screen projector and screen can be added to the giant iPod docking station, party / dancing lights, wireless microphone, they can even add larger sound or set you up to use your computer on there system. They also can rent you a full DJ rig with very powerful sound.

Sound for dancing sounds better when it's closer to the dancing area. Have someone line up the guests for introductions and make sure whoever is being announced for whatever event is actually there. (Having M.I.A.'s looks bad and wastes time).

Have someone coordinate with the folks providing food service and camera/videographers. Nothing is worse than someone saying go get the food when it's not ready yet, announcing a toast when no beverage is available or having the 1st dance missed by the photographer or worse yet a missing spouse.

Have someone control the microphones use. If you have a free for all on the microphone you may get screaming, talking over songs, bad language or just way too much conversation by to many people that can hold up the events. Especially when alcohol is served.

When programming your music decide if you want to just please yourself or do you wish to also please your guests. Many times they expect the silly stuff to have fun. A musically themed event is nice for creating an atmosphere however it can be boring if not programmed with the guest's fun in mind.

If your going to pick people to do the announcements and music, choose people whom don't mind spending time away from the fun of the wedding. Don't you or your spouse try to run all this yourself. Remember it's YOUR day and you don't want to be stressed out or not remember / experience the joy of your wedding day.
